Looking Out for LUPAs

Managing for Low Utilization Payment Adjustment (LUPAs) has always been a hot topic for home healthcare providers, and now is no different with zero-pay RAPs in place. Corridor’s Vice President of Revenue Management Services, Beth Prince, shared in our recent how-to webinar on no-pay RAPs that LUPAs were up across the board in home healthcare in 2020 due to Covid, but recent polls show a downward trend closer to 8 to 12% in early 2021. She suggests the best way to minimize and manage LUPAs begins with internal communication and education.   

  1. Start by clearly stating what constitutes a LUPA in each environment.

  2. Conduct a root-cause analysis – why are these happening? Identify if there are behaviors that need to be modified and determine the best way to address them.

  3. Determine what is avoidable versus unavoidable – keep you finger on the pulse of your organization to minimize those that are truly unavoidable.

  4. Develop processes and protocols to measure, monitor and correct behaviors – Dashboards can present data on critical elements such as volumes of rescheduled and missed visits, and the number of patients you have scheduled in the second period of that care episode. 

Being proactive with your patients and managing the above tasks appropriately will optimize your revenues and protect your bottom line.
